Day 7 - Thursday July 11 - Madurodam / Scheveningen

This day is dedicated to reliving two of Frans childhood memories.

Madurodam, miniature village and cultural attraction and the city of her birth, Scheveningen.

Madurodam (Dutch pronunciation: [maːˌdyːroːˈdɑm]) is a miniature park and tourist attraction in the Scheveningen district of The Hague in the Netherlands. It is home to a range of 1:25 scale model replicas of famous Dutch landmarks, historical cities and large developments. The park was opened in 1952 and has since been visited by tens of millions of visitors. The entirety of net proceeds from the park go towards various charities in the Netherlands.

Francis was born in Scheveningen and lived at 58 Arnhemsestraat until she was four, at which time, her family emigrated to Canada. She visited her homeland in 1964 and once more in 2000 during a Gazley family trip to Europe. So, this trip in 2024 is filled with childhood memories, and experiencing new ones as she sees everything with new eyes.

Scheveningen [ˈsxeːvənɪŋə(n)]  is one of the eight districts of The HagueNetherlands, as well as a subdistrict (wijk) of that city. Scheveningen is a modern seaside resort with a long, sandy beach, an esplanade, a pier, and a lighthouse. The beach is popular for water sports such as windsurfing and kiteboarding.[2] The harbour is used for both fishing and tourism.
